Trevor and Mathew traveled the remainder of the day without any more trouble from outlaws and bushwhackers. Mathew spent his time riding on top of the load keeping a sharp lookout for any more trouble. Both men continued to think of the happenings of the previous night. Five men dead, and for what reason. Neither man could figure out why they were set upon the way they were. Even Satan was keeping a close watch as he rushed the hitch along. He wanted to get as far away from the previous nightâs campsite and he wanted to do it as fast as possible.
âSay, Trevor, how about tossing me up a piece of jerky from the side box. Maybe that canteen and a wedge of cornbread to go along with it. Iâm starting to get a hunger pain,â Mathew said around two in the afternoon.
Trevor figured it was about time for a little grub himself. He stopped the hitch of mules and set the wheel lock on the big wagon. He looked up to see Mathew poking around on his leg.
âHowâs that gunshot wound of yours looking? You keep nosing around like that and it might start to bleed again.â
Mathew pulled the bandage to the side and made a frown. âAlright, alright. I reckon itâs just a little red is all. I feel real bad about riding the top of the wagon like this, but I really donât know how far I could walk with the way this leg is looking.â
âYou just said it was looking fine now which it is?â
âFine I guess but I donât like the way itâs getting red and all. I might even feel a bit feverish to boot,â Mathew said as he continued to poke and prod at the wound.
âHere, can you catch or do I need to climb this stuff up to you?â
âI can catch, Yank, can you throw is the real question?
âYou know calling me names ainât going to get you any lunch so shut the hell up if you want this cornbread.â
Mathew caught the canteen, and then his cornbread and jerky. As he and Trevor ate they both kept a close watch on their surroundings. Getting nearly killed the night before, and again this morning, will make a man cautious.
âTrevor, grab one of them rifles and keep it with you while you eat.â
Trevor stood up and looked around, âYou see something?â
âI thought I caught a glimpse of a rider about a half mile up the trail. He came out from some trees and then he was gone again.â
Trevor grabbed one of the long guns and then checked to make sure it was fully loaded. âYou see him again?â
âNaw, just the once. Maybe since the two of us are now set for guns we might just use the money we was going to spend on a new shooter to buy us a spyglass. It would be real handy right now,â Mathew said as he held a hand over his forehead to try and reduce the glare.
